Sophie Wilson’s ARM Microprocessor

The 2014 Lovie Lifetime Achievement Award went to British computer scientist Sophie Wilson, in recognition of her incredible invention of the ARM processor. Wilson’s groundbreaking work has given her a rightful place among the seminal architects of the modern computer-driven world.

As the designer of the Acorn Micro-Computer and inventor of the ARM processor instruction set, Wilson not only revolutionised computer technology in the 1970s and 80s, but she paved the way for every computing revolution to come: from digital cameras to smartphones to tablets, and the thousands of consumer electronic products that rely on ARM.

There is no doubt that the universe of mobile upon which we now depend simply could not exist today without the brilliant, and essential, work of Sophie Wilson.
