How to Clean Your Vape Coils

Coils are one of the few parts of a vaping device that need to be replaced as time goes by. Saving money in the long run is important, so making your coils last longer is beneficial.
In a previous post, we discussed extending the life of coils, which can be read here. Here, we focus on how to clean coils, whether they are for standard (stock coil) devices or rebuildable atomizers.
Cleaning standard (stock) vape coils

If your device uses standard pre-built coils, like the Innokin Zenith II, you might not have considered cleaning the coil. Even with the new ACM technology in devices like the Kroma 217 and Coolfire Z80, the coil’s performance will still decline over time.
The burnt taste and reduced vapor output are consequences of the residue that accumulates when e-liquid is heated.Squeezing an extra few days of life out of the coil by cleaning it, may not restore full performance, but it can be a positive step forward.
How to clean standard vape coils?
- When vaping performance has severely declined, take out the coil from your tank or device.
- To remove some outer layers of residue from the wicking material and coil surface, run the coil under hot water for a few seconds.
- Submerge the coil in boiling water for about 30 minutes in a container.
- Let the coil air dry completely for 24 hours.
Although a cleaned coil won’t perform as well as a new one, it extends the lifespan, saving you money and reducing waste.

Unlike stock coils, the coils in rebuildable atomisers are designed to be cleaned and reused over a long period of time. The cleaning process is more thorough due to the ability to remove the wicking material and coil itself from the build deck, resulting in better performance.
How to clean rebuildable vape coils?
- If your vaping performance has significantly declined, remove the atomiser deck from your rebuildable tank or dripper.
- Clear out all the wicking material from the center of the coil and wicking channels while keeping the coil in place.
- Run the atomizer deck under hot water briefly.
- Check for any residue on the atomizer deck. Use a damp paper towel and more hot water if there is any remaining residue to clean it off.
- Let the atomizer deck dry.
- Attach the atomizer deck to a regulated mod, like the Kroma 217.
- Gradually pulse the coil in short bursts at around 50% of your vaping wattage until the coil glows.
- Inspect the coil between pulses for any leftover residues and remove them by gently scraping with tweezers or a small flathead screwdriver.
- Once you’ve removed all visible residue, rinse the coil carefully under warm water to clean any residue that might have fallen from the coil into the deck.
- Let the atomizer dry completely.
After following these steps, you can re-wick the coil, prime it, and resume vaping at full performance. With proper maintenance, a high-quality coil can last for months in rebuildable atomizers since they allow for thorough cleaning. This is why tanks like the Ares 2 provide excellent value for money if you’re willing to learn how to build!
