Is there anything in vapes not suitable for vegans?
At least some of the 1.4 million Vegans in the UK either smoke or use e-cigarettes. But is vaping Vegan? The short answer: yes. However, the clarity of this matter isn’t straightforward.
What is Veganism?
According to the Vegan Society, Veganism is:
a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose
Vegan living involves following a plant-based diet that avoids animal foods like meat, dairy, eggs, and honey.
What’s in e-liquid?
E-liquid comprises 4 main components.
Vegetable Glycerine (VG) is derived from plant oils.
Propylene Glycol (PG) originates from petroleum and is not animal-related.
Nicotine is usually in synthetic or natural form, extracted from tobacco plants. However, the concern lies in the treatment of these plants, some of which may have been exposed to non-vegan pesticides.
Flavourings in vapes are mainly synthetic and thus vegan-friendly.
Ionised Water is occasionally added to VG to create Aqueous Glycerine (AG), which serves the same purpose but has a thinner consistency.
Are vapes Vegan?
E-cigs, being electronic devices, are not subject to animal testing, making them vegan-friendly, right? It’s subjective based on one’s strictness. Previous animal testing, possibly conducted over a decade ago, might have influenced current data. This ethical decision rests with each individual.
Is smoking Vegan?
Surprisingly, cigarettes are not vegan. They contain numerous harmful chemicals, some causing cancers, and other additives unsuitable for vegans.
Some filters may contain porcine haemoglobin, derived from pig’s blood, rendering them unideal even for vegetarians.
Tobacco flavorings might come from castoreum, extracted from glands in beavers.
Another additive, beeswax, though the least contentious, is still non-vegan. Beekeeping is considered mistreatment by certain vegans.
