Early Life

Born on April 22, 1990, in Houston, Texas, Richard Colson Baker grew up with missionary parents, which led to frequent travels with his family. As a child, they lived in various countries, including Germany and Egypt, in addition to moving around different states in the US. Eventually, he and his father settled in Denver after his mother left.

During his teenage years, Baker faced bullying, leading him to fight back with words. He developed a passion for rap and began creating his own music. After his father went to work for the Army in Kuwait, Baker moved into a neighbor’s basement and began experimenting with drugs. It was during this period that he recorded his first mixtape, Stamp of Approval. After eventually dropping out of school, his father took him to live in Kuwait.

Career

Upon returning to the States and finishing high school, Baker persuaded an MC manager to assist with his career launch. It was then that he chose the stage name “Machine Gun Kelly,” reflecting his rapid-fire delivery style. He started performing at local spots and graced the stage at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. He made an appearance on MTV2’s Sucker Free Freestyle and released his second mixtape, 100 Words and Running. While gaining visibility, he encountered financial hardships; his father evicted him from their home, and he also became a father while working at Chipotle to support himself.

A significant breakthrough arrived when he released the single “Alice in Wonderland,” which earned him several awards and heightened his visibility before launching his mixtape Lace Up. One track was notably dedicated to the Cleveland Cavaliers and played in their stadium during home games. Following this success, MGK collaborated with Juicy J on the single “Inhale.” In 2011, Sean Combs signed him to Bad Boy Records.

MGK was prepared to unveil his debut studio album, titled Lace Up, in 2012. The album featured popular tracks such as “Invincible” and “Wild Boy,” showcasing collaborations with artists like Tech N9ne, Twista, and DMX. Additionally, that year, he partnered with various artists, including Pusha T and Meek Mill, to produce a mixtape entitled Black Flag. Following several delays, he launched his second studio album, General Admission, in 2015.

In 2016, the collaboration between MGK and Camila Cabello resulted in the hit single “Bad Things.” By 2018, MGK’s rivalry with Eminem escalated significantly. Years earlier, MGK had referred to Eminem’s then-16-year-old daughter as “hot” in a tweet. Eminem only became aware of this tweet over a year later, leading him to craft a diss track aimed at MGK. As the conflict evolved, Eminem eventually prohibited MGK from appearing on his online radio platform. A notable diss track by MGK directed at Eminem was the 2018 release “Rap Devil.”

MGK’s fourth studio album, Hotel Diablo, was released in 2019. This album included singles such as “I Think I’m Okay” and “Glass House,” debuting at number 5 on the charts. He also announced that his next album, Tickets to My Downfall, would feature a collaboration with Travis Barker, slated for release in 2020. In 2022, he released the studio album Mainstream Sellout.

Acting

Films featuring MGK include Beyond the Lights, The Land, Bird Box, The Dirt, and Big Time Adolescence. He also made an appearance on MTV’s Wild ‘n Out. In 2022, Machine Gun Kelly took on the role of “London Clash” in his self-directed film, Good Mourning.

Personal Life

Kelly shares a daughter with his ex-partner Emma Cannon. Their daughter, named Casie, was born in 2009.

He has been in relationships with models Amber Rose and Sommer Ray. In May 2020, he started dating actress Megan Fox, and in January 2022, Fox announced their engagement. However, reports in May 2023 indicated that the couple was taking a “break again.”

Real Estate

In early 2020, MGK began renting a newly constructed home located in Sherman Oaks, California, with a monthly rent of $30,000.

Machine Gun Kelly purchased Logan Paul’s former mansion in Encino, California, for $7.5 million in April 2022. Logan acquired the property in October 2017 for $6.55 million and had listed it for sale at $8.5 million. The mansion spans 30,000 square feet, boasts 14 rooms, and underwent extensive renovations by Paul shortly after his purchase in 2017.
