Judges Select Finalists for the Premier Award that Celebrates Europe’s Internet Community, Honouring Media Companies, Brands, Independent Creators, Agencies and Tech Companies
Public Voting in the People’s Lovie Awards starts today through 3 October at vote.lovieawards.eu
24 September 2019: The Lovie Awards, presented by The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS), today announced the finalists for the 9th Annual awards. Sister of the international Webby Awards, The Lovie Awards is the premier honour celebrating the best of the European Internet community. Finalists include 4:3 by Boiler Room TV, Libby, Moo, Bosch, Alphaputt, as well as some of Europe’s biggest online publishers including The Economist, The Guardian, VICE, Nowness, LADBible, BBC, Al Jazeera, BuzzFeed and VOGUE Spain.
Following the judging selection process, voting is now open for the People’s Lovie Awards through 3 October at vote.lovieawards.eu. Based on a popular vote of category finalists, the People’s Lovie Awards gives the public an opportunity to select its favourite projects to win a Lovie Award alongside those winners chosen by the Academy.
Lovie Award Finalists are selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS). Members include musician Imogen Heap, actor and writer Stephen Fry, “Father of Wi-Fi” Vic Hayes, Vice President and Chief AI Scientist, Facebook Yann LeCun, Vice President, Digital Consumer Engagement, LEGO Anna Rafferty, Director, Chalk and Blade Ruth Barnes, Broadcaster Lauren Laverne, Executive Creative Director, Wieden + Kennedy London Iain Tait, Strategy Director, AKQA Miriam Plon Sauer, and Co-Founder, TomTom and Codam College Corinne Vigreux among others.
“Since launching the Lovie Awards nine years ago we’ve been exposed to so many imaginative and accomplished projects from across Europe,” said Nicolas Roope, IADAS Jury Chairman of The Lovie Awards. Continuing; “We’re honoured to celebrate so many positive, forward-thinking and innovative businesses, initiatives, campaigns and crafts on the internet that are helping to improve the world we live in.”
This year, The Lovie Awards introduced a brand new suite for Voice honours, and the finalists show inventive and inspiring uses of this growing technology, such as “KLM Travel Assistant” (KLM/Code D’Azur), an AI voice assistant that helps people manage their journey, “BBC Good Food Alexa Skill” (BBC/Hi Mum! Said Dad) for hands-free help in the kitchen, and “Parents vs. Kids” quiz featuring Richard Osman (O2 and NSPCC/VCCP).
Key cultural and societal issues are prominently reflected across this year’s finalists. “Mind the Gap” by Serviceplan Gruppe and MediaMonks, for example, highlights the gender pay gap and women’s rights. “Genderless Voice” (Virtue) promotes gender-neutral voice technology, while political unrest is explored in “Sudan’s Livestream Massacre” (BBC Africa Eye).
This year’s finalists also demonstrate how to successfully integrate AI, AR and machine learning into brand work. Finalists in Virtual Reality and 360 Video include “Virtual Helsinki – VR Experience” (ZOAN), a digital twin of Helsinki city centre, which can be used for tourism, shopping, concerts and virtual citizenship; “The Scream VR,” a documentary experience in virtual reality that presents a unique interpretation of the Expressionist masterpiece by Edvard Munch (Cineteve Experience), and “DuMond Discovery Dock,” an interactive micro amusement park, which immerses visitors from all over the world into new parts of Koln, Germany (Demordern GmbH/ DuMond Media Group).
The 9th Annual Lovie Awards saw nearly 1,500 entries from 33 countries submitted in seven native languages, with notable regional growth in Austria, which doubled its number of entries compared to last year, and in Denmark (152% growth). Winners will be announced on Tuesday, 8 October and honoured at a star-studded awards ceremony at The BFI Southbank in London on Thursday, 14 November 2019.
The Lovie Awards is supported by Google for the sixth year running as premier sponsor, joining the Lovie commitment to shining a spotlight on the European Internet’s best and brightest. Supporting sponsors include WP Engine among others.
