8 October 2019: The Guardian, James O’Brien, Culture Trip, WeTransfer, Zalando, LADbible, and Barbican Centre among others are named winners of The 9th Annual Lovie Awards, the most prestigious pan-European honour for online excellence. The Lovie Awards also named Denmark’s & Co. as Lovie Agency of the Year, based on the advertising agency that performed the best across all categories.
All winners will be awarded along with Lovie Award Special Achievement honourees, including actor, producer and star of Netflix’s “Top Boy” Season 3 Ashley Walters, podcast and recording artist and spoken-word performer George Mpanga, a.k.a. George the Poet, YouTube creator and author Grace F Victory and more at The 9th Annual Lovie Awards, hosted by acclaimed comedian Ellie Taylor on 14 November at BFI Southbank in London. All winners are showcased online at www.lovieawards.eu
The Lovie Award winners are selected by The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences (IADAS), which includes over 500 of Europe’s best and brightest leaders in digital, including musician Imogen Heap, actor and writer Stephen Fry, “Father of Wi-Fi” Vic Hayes, Yann LeCun (Vice President and Chief AI Scientist, Facebook), Iain Tait (Executive Creative Director, Wieden + Kennedy London), Corinne Vigreux (Co-Founder, TomTom and Codam College) and Lauren Laverne (Broadcaster). The People’s Lovie Award winners are determined by the public.
IADAS also announced Special Achievement winners for 2018, honouring people in Europe who use the internet in exceptional ways. They are:
Ashley Walters, Lovie Best Actor, for his brilliant work as Dushane in the Netflix series “Top Boy” Season 3. The show and performance emphasise the impacts and social issues stemming from drug addiction and gangs, poverty and gentrification, from a deeply human centre.
George Mpanga, a.k.a. George The Poet, Lovie Artist of the Year: For brilliantly redefining what a podcast can be with ”Have You Heard George’s Podcast?” and for using the medium to shine a light on important cultural issues as a role model to his community and beyond.
Grace F Victory, Lovie Creator for Change, for openly tackling important and taboo subjects on YouTube where she discusses issues ranging from eating disorders and body positivity, to mental health and well beyond, to the benefit of millions online across the world.
Elsa Bernadotte, Mattis Larsson, Ludvig Berling and Hjalmar Ståhlberg Nordegren: Founders of Karma – Lovie Emerging Entrepreneurs: For using the internet to revolutionise and curb food waste.
They join previous Special Achievement winners such as Jamie Oliver, Björk, Stephen Fry, Annie Lennox, Michael Dapaah (Big Shaq), Yann LeCun, Sophie Wilson, JR, and The European Space Agency, among others.
“This year’s winners exemplify the creativity, boldness of spirit and the convergence of cultures that represents the Lovies, and Europe.” commented Nicolas Roope, IADAS Jury Chairman of The Lovie Awards. “Our aim goes beyond awarding outstanding work. It also provides an opportunity to learn and seek inspiration from all projects across the European digital spectrum that positively impact people both online and off.”
